Telemedicine is an innovative and the most imminent field in healthcare management in India. Telemedicine is the effective fusion of healthcare and Information and communication technology which is aimed at delivering healthcare assistance to the population in rural and remote areas. Telemedicine is the use of electronic information to communicate technologies in order to provide and support good-quality specialty healthcare when distance separates the participants. It is evolved in practice in primary areas like critical care and emergency situations. In India, the Apollo group of hospitals was a pioneer in starting a pilot project at a secondary level hospital in a village called Aragonda in Andhra Pradesh.
Telemedicine literally means “distance healing;” it is basically derived from two words “Tele” is a Greek word meaning “distance” and “mederi” which is a Latin word meaning “to heal.” The healthcare industry has always been one of the most productive, yet steadily growing, industries across the globe. In general telemedicine technology has already created a wave of positive impact in the developing regions like India. Telemedicine uses IT, through the sensible use of telecommunication systems, computers and other related software to provide quality healthcare.
WHO defines Telemedicine as “the delivery of healthcare services, where distance is a critical factor, by all healthcare professionals using information and communication technologies for the exchange of valid information for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease and injuries, research and evaluation and for the continuing education of healthcare professionals, all in the interests of advancing the health of individuals and their communities.”
In India, telemedicine programs are actively supported by Department of Information Technology (DIT), Indian Space Research Organization, Apollo Hospitals, Asia Heart Foundation, some private organizations, NEC Telemedicine program for North-Eastern states etc. These departments are working as a facilitator with the long-term objective of effective utilization/incorporation of Information Technology and initiating pilot schemes in selected specialty, e.g., Oncology, Tropical Diseases, and General Telemedicine system.
